The Competitive World of Cruise Job Hunting

by admin on July 22, 2010

Cruise line is a fast growing industry. Companies have job openings all year round and they increased the number of cruise ship job vacant positions compared to the statistics two years ago. They evolved from the traditional cruise vacation to themed cruises. They also expanded their destinations. This is the reason why job seekers are very eager to try their luck in this industry.

Cruise ships are said to be floating cities. They offers almost everything a city has. Therefore, like in any city there are numerous kinds of jobs from the officers to the staff and crew. It can be anything from the captain of the ship to waiters, housekeeping, plumbers, engineers, gym instructors, sales man, electricians, receptionist, chef, entertainers, bartenders, hair stylist, massage therapist and much more. And the more available jobs, the higher competition. By competition, I’m not just referring to the graduates of the same degree or to anyone that has the same skills but also to job seekers from other countries.

There are many reasons why these people want to be employed in this kind of job. For instance, the salary. Most of them wants to earn big. Others are after the benefits. They don’t have to pay any taxes when they work on board unless they are American citizens aboard US-based cruise line. Another benefit is that the employees, as well as their family, can avail of the discounted cruise rates. And of course, who wouldn’t want to travel for free? Nevertheless, there are some who are just tired of their boring routine at work and now wants to have an exciting job.

But not all will be given a chance to work on a luxurious ship. Most of the employees have received tons of rejection letters before they finally had their dream job at the palm of their hands. Some job hunters who have received such letter would just give up and just try their luck in other industries but most of them keeps on trying until they reach their goal and I commend them.

Not everyone is rejected because of their skills. Some are qualified but lacks requirements. One good example of this is when a person is denied of a visa that is needed on one of the countries included in the route of the ship. This kind of misfortune is already out of hand of the applicant and the employer. No matter how qualified the person is, there is nothing else that can be done about it.

Working on a cruise ship maybe hard but getting into one is harder. That’s why when you already passed all the tests, exams, interviews and other procedures, be industrious and love your job. Remember that there are a lot of people who would do anything to trade places with you. And once you’re in, the competition never stops. You should do well so that there is a better chance for renewal or extension of contract. You should also be competitive so that promotion and salary increase will be sooner than expected.
